Piro Spring: The Game-Changer AFO
Piro Spring 3D printed AFO is an excellent choice for so many children. Its unique design can be configured to address many different gait deviations.
It provides a more natural gait while maintaining control and support.
The best part? The alignment and stiffness is adjustable, allowing your clinician to fine-tune the device in minutes to perfectly suit your child's needs throughout the treatment.
It starts as a perfect fit — and stays one.
Engineered to Evolve with Your Child
Six innovations that redefine what an AFO can do.
Improved Outcomes
More available range of motion, more natural gait. Better biomechanics, improved symmetry, reduced compensatory movement.
Exact Custom Resistance
Match resistance precisely to child's needs, optimized across all three rockers. Multiple interchangeable struts let your orthotist dial in the perfect stiffness.
Real-Time Ankle Angle Changes
Adjustable alignment on the spot using shims and tuning elements. Achieve proper SVA angle and plantar or dorsiflexion without remakes.
Adjustable Heel
An integrated adjustable heel system that grows and adapts with your child. No more compromises as biomechanics change.
All-Day Comfort
Engineered to be thin, light, and durable using advanced 3D printing. Variable-thickness design puts material only where it's needed to enhance both control and comfort.
Proprioceptive Soft Heel
Built-in sensory feedback. Children feel the ground and move instinctively. Small feature with a large impact.
Modular design with interchangeable components for ongoing optimization.
Case Study
Israel: From Gait Trainer to independent walking in 6 days
When traditional AFOs weren't delivering results, the clinical team turned to Piro Spring. Israel went from utilizing a gait trainer to independent steps in just 6 days. By six months he was discharged from PT sessions for the first time in 8 years as he was doing so well.
What Parents Say
Our experience with Spring new braces has been so wonderful! We have not experienced any redness or irritation. Amelie's gait is looking wonderful. She can run in these and jump in these in a way other brace styles did not allow. She absolutely loves them! We are just so impressed and thankful!
100% Custom Fit
Designed For One Child. Yours.
Children don't stand still — and neither should their orthosis. Piro Spring is designed and 3D printed 100% custom to your child. Its modular design means it keeps up as your child grows, progresses, and hits new milestones.
Day 1: Perfect Fit
Piro Spring will flawlessly fit on your child. 100% custom fit based on scan of a cast with sub-mm accuracy or 14 measurements that our proprietary software turns into an incredibly accurate digital model.
Week 5: Fine-Tuned
Swapping struts, adjusting resistance, fine-tuning ankle angle — all in-clinic, in minutes. The brace adapts to how your child actually moves as they progress in their new AFO.
Month 6: Still Perfect
As your child grows stronger, the orthotist adjusts resistance and alignment to match. The same device evolves with your child's progress through real-time changes and unique smart bio-responsive design.
Make It Personal.
Choose shell color, strap color, and add a personal symbol. Because an orthosis kids are proud of is an orthosis they'll actually wear.
Built for Every Phase of Gait
A natural step consists of three phases. Piro Spring's modular strut mimics how healthy muscles control the foot from heel strike to push-off, supporting more natural gait cycle.
Rocker 1 — Controlled Heel Strike
The strut resists plantar flexion the way the anterior tibialis does, lowering the foot gradually instead of slamming it flat. For children with an anterior center of mass, that prevents being thrown into midstance too quickly — something solid and articulated AFOs with plantar flexion stops tend to do.
Rocker 2 — Smooth Tibial Progression
As the tibia advances over the foot, the strut deforms from plantar flexion into dorsiflexion. It stores energy, controls the rate of progression, and creates the knee extension moment needed for a stable midstance — mirroring the eccentric work of the gastroc-soleus.
Rocker 3 — Propulsive Push-Off
The strut returns toward neutral at terminal stance, releasing the stored energy back into the step. Five selectable toe lever stiffnesses let clinicians tune the energy return — driving a more propulsive and energy efficient gait pattern.
What Orthotists Say
More than 1000 leading orthotic clinics and children's hospitals choose Piro.
We have used the pediatric strut AFO and the therapist just reached out to us and let us know that she is impressed with the Piro Spring and that her only complaint is that the kiddo is now out running her in therapy because she is doing so well!
Just sending you some feedback on the Spring AFOs that I got from a Therapist: "She is doing SOOO GOOD. Those braces have changed her life, they fit her perfectly, she is completely independent walking and even running now. Her gait has dramatically improved."
Frequently Asked Questions
Piro Spring is designed for a wide range of pediatric conditions where an AFO is indicated to improve gait stability and functional mobility. These include Cerebral palsy, developmental delay, hypotonia, hypertonia, spasticity, and other neurological, neuromuscular, or developmental conditions that affect movement patterns and postural control.
It covers indications typically addressed by solid AFOs, articulated AFOs, GRAFOs, and posterior leaf spring designs — with the advantage of adjustable resistance and alignment that can be refined over time.
Traditional AFOs — whether solid or articulated — require fixed decisions about resistance and alignment during fabrication. Once the device is made, those parameters are largely locked in.
Piro Spring is built on a modular, 3D-printed architecture with interchangeable struts and tuning elements. This means your clinician can adjust the resistance, SVA angle, and ankle angle in real time during fitting and at every follow-up visit. Think of it as instead of a rigid, one-time setup, you get a system that can be tuned with a few simple adjustments.
Absolutely — that's one of its core advantages. Clinicians can swap struts to change resistance, exchange shims to modify the dorsiflexion or plantar flexion angle, and adjust heel wedges to shift alignment. All of this can be done in-clinic, in minutes.
This is especially important in pediatric care, where a child's tone, strength, range of motion, and motor control can change significantly over the 6–12 months they typically wear an AFO. If a child is getting stronger, you can challenge them with a more flexible strut. If they're tighter or gaining weight, a stiffer strut can maintain gait quality.
The Piro Spring AFO design in general requires fewer adjustments for fit and growth due to bio-responsive design, durable straps and custom fit based on accurate model. Further the device can be modified by grinding and thermoforming as any other AFO.
